Oxytocin is a clear colorless solution for injection. It induces rhythmic uterine contraction which increases throughout the pregnancy, reaching the max at term by proliferating oxytocin receptors. It increases the tone and amplitude of the uterine contractions at small doses.
Formulation:
Each mL contains
Oxytocin BP 10 I.U.
Packaging/Availability:
USP Type I glass ampoule x 1mL (net content). Box of 10’s.
Indication:
Oxytocin is used during the late stage of pregnancy to induce labor contraction in case of post maturity, premature rupture of membranes or pre-eclampsia. It can also be used during pregnancy to test the heartbeat of fetus; as well as to remove the afterbirth (placenta), management of missed and incomplete abortion, to control bleeding of the womb when undergo caesarean procedure and postpartum hemorrhage in patients who do not respond to Ergometrine.
Dosage and Administration:
Parenteral drug products should be inspected visually for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration, whenever solution and container permit. Dosage of oxytocin is determined by the uterine response. The following dosage information is based upon various regimens and indications in general use.
nduction of Labor= 0.5milliunits/min slow IV Infusion gradually increased to 1.2 milliunits/min at 20mins. interval.
Treatment and Prevention of postpartum hemorrhage 5 i.u slow IV inj. Severe cases 5-20 in mL IV inj.
Management of Incomplete or Missed Abortion=5 i.u. I.M or slow IV if necessary followed by IV infusion at the rate of > 20-40 milliunits/min.
